Cary Family Dental and Cary Magazine Partner for Second Annual Cary Smile Makeover

Nominations now being accepted for women in Western Wake County

CARY, NC – March 4, 2010 – Cary Family Dental and Cary Magazine are again partnering to award one person the “smile of a lifetime” with their 2nd Annual Cary Smile Makeover www.carysmilemakeover.com. The makeover is open to women of Western Wake County who would like to have a better, more beautiful smile. Dr. Allan Acton, of Cary Family Dental, will be performing the dental work and the selected individual will be featured in the September/October issue of Cary Magazine.

Cary resident Pat Mitchell was the recipient of the 2009 Smile Makeover, valued at $20,000. In her nomination entry, Mitchell wrote, “I have not smiled in a photograph in a very long time. I try to keep my mouth closed and my teeth hidden because it is embarrassing and disgusting.”

At the time of the contest, Mitchell was a single mother struggling to make ends meet. Always putting her two children first, she often neglected her own personal needs—including dental care. “They just started falling apart,” says Mitchell. Years of neglect, breakdown, and decay left her with teeth that she was unwilling to share with friends or her own family. She said that when an email popped up in her inbox announcing the Smile Makeover, it was “perfect timing”.

After submitting her photos and essay online, she asked a few friends to vote for her and pass the word. Mitchell’s plea was soon spread through the MySpace and Facebook community and in a short time, she had collected more than 3,000 votes—most from total strangers.

Mitchell’s makeover was performed during a two-month period by Dr. Acton. A combination of large cavities, broken crowns, chipped teeth, and periodontal disease required extensive work. In the end, Dr. Acton put in 11 crowns, two bridges, and a partial. Only three of Mitchell’s original teeth were untouched. Dr. Acton says that he’s excited about what he did for Pat and is looking forward to making a positive difference in someone’s life this year. “That’s why I come to work every day,” says Dr. Acton. “I really enjoy making positive changes in people’s lives.”

Cary Family Dental and Cary Magazine will be accepting nominations on their website at www.carysmilemakeover.com until March 15. All nominations will be reviewed by the contest sponsors and a final group of 10 makeover finalists will be posted to the website for public voting. Entrants must be 21 years of age or older and must comply with all contest rules and guidelines.
