Hello everyone!
Thank you to everyone for the kind wishes about my broken arm. It has been a little over three weeks since I fell off my bike and my left arm is still hurting. The doctor expects that it may still be a few more weeks till it’s better. In the meantime, I am still at work most days with some limited functionality.
Also congratulations to the Carolina Hurricanes. They won last night in game 5 of the first round of the Stanley Cup and will be playing the New York Rangers next. Go Canes!
Sincerely,
Allan Acton, DDS
This Week’s before and after
In this week’s feature on smile makeovers, Dr. Eric Davis showcases a wonderful smile transformation. There are three primary aspects of your teeth that can be modified: color, shape, and position. Often, a combination of these elements is adjusted to achieve optimal results. For this particular case, Dr. Davis utilized porcelain restorations to alter both the color and the shape of the patient’s teeth. The patient was extremely pleased with her new smile. The entire process spanned roughly 3-5 weeks.
Office News
Introducing the New Itero Lumina Scanner! We’re excited to share that we’ve recently upgraded one of our 3D scanners to the state-of-the-art Itero Lumina model, promising a faster and more comfortable experience.
A few years back, we embarked on a journey to bid farewell to the messy goopy impressions of yesteryear. Those old impressions were a hassle – messy and prone to errors, often requiring retakes. With our 3D scanners, we’ve revolutionized the process, offering a more comfortable and precise impression. Now, with the latest Lumina scanner, the experience is even better – sleeker and quicker.
Our scanners have become indispensable, covering almost every scenario where impressions were once necessary, including whitening trays, nightguards, crowns, dentures, and Invisalign.
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month
Oral cancer is a form of abnormal and uncontrolled cellular growth affecting the mouth and throat, categorized under head and neck cancers. Risk factors include tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, sun exposure, HPV infection, aging (particularly between 40-60 years), and poor nutrition. Symptoms may manifest as throat soreness, difficulty swallowing or moving the jaw, numbness in the lips or face, voice alterations, and persistent lumps or ulcers. Detection methods involve physical examinations, endoscopy, imaging techniques such as X-rays and MRI, biopsies, and ultrasound for neck nodules. Treatment options vary based on cancer stage (I-IV), location, overall health, and individual preferences.
Dental organizations like the ADA emphasize the importance of routine oral cancer screenings—early detection saves lives!

Things I am loving…
Sometimes you just want your life to be a little bit easier. Here are a few things I have found that make certain parts of my life simpler.
Note Taking: I often take notes and then misplace them. To solve this, I purchased a Remarkable 2 right after Christmas. It’s a digital notebook that consolidates all my notes in one location. I can create separate notebooks for different meetings within it. It also has a feature that recognizes handwriting, although I don’t use this feature very often.
Meat Thermometer: It’s becoming grilling season again and everyone wants their food to come out perfect. I have found that this meat thermometer works great. When I cook it to the recommended temperature the food comes out great. Use this chart to figure out what temperature different meat needs to be.
Wallet Tracker: If you’re concerned about misplacing your wallet or often leave it around the house and can’t find it, consider this wallet tracker. It uses technology similar to the Apple AirTag, but it’s slim enough to fit neatly inside your wallet. I’ve placed one in my wallet and also taped one to my computer—just to be safe.
❓ Understanding Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Risk factors like genetics, smoking, diabetes, stress, and oral hygiene contribute to its development. Untreated periodontitis can lead to bone and tooth loss, with potential systemic health implications such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Management involves non-surgical and surgical interventions to address the condition and reduce associated risks.

Memorial Day
During the month of May, I will be displaying this American flag painting in our office to honor our military veterans. I bought this painting last Memorial Day as a tribute to my father who had recently passed away. He had served in the Army and in Vietnam during the late 1960’s.
