For Heather Shields, winning the Cary Smile Makeover contest did more than just change her smile…it changed her life. After struggling with her oral health, she sent letters to 10 different dentists looking for help. Dr. Allan Acton and his staff informed her that she still had time to enter the Cary Smile Makeover contest. The thought of posting a photo of her teeth for everyone to see was frightening for Heather, but also necessary to win. As a result, her story and photograph were featured on the Cary Smile Makeover website and within no time Heather had numerous Internet supporters.
Tens of thousands of votes later, Heather was on her way to a new smile with Dr. Acton and his assistant Taryn. They performed a series of root canals and extractions in order to prepare her mouth. After five appointments, she was fitted with a set of partial dentures that gave her a new, beautiful smile that she could show off with confidence.
Heather’s teeth weren’t always in poor shape. In fact, before she was 18, she had never even had a cavity. However, due to a string of bad experiences her teeth were left very broken down. “She got to a place that a lot of people get where it’s overwhelming to think of what has to be done,” stated Dr. Acton.
